busy busy busy

well things have been crazy around here. Finley is 9 months old and growing up fast. She is getting around quickly and slowly working on pulling herself up to a standing position. She is more engaged with her toys and loves pressing buttons and feeling different textures. And most exciting is that she finally has one tooth, which makes eating a lot easier. Her favorite foods are still pretty much the same....liver, cheese, eggs, hummus, any kind of fruit, pasta, beans, and sweet potatoes.

The biggest change has been me going to work full time for training. I will eventually be working part time from home, but not before I complete 2 months of training in downtown Seattle. I am gone for 10 hours a day. Its a huge change. My day used to consist of errands, playing, diapers and house chores and cooking. Now Im on the bus by 7 am, at work by 8 am and then home and a mad rush to get everything done in a very short amount of time and spend as much quality time with my baby as possible. Its tiring.

Luckily Finleys Gran and Grandpa have been here to take care of her all day and make sure she is having a great time (daycare starts next week). I have been able to continue nursing her. I only have to pump once at work and she only gets a 5 oz bottle while Im gone. I feed her once before I leave and then when I get home and before she goes to bed. Four feedings a day seems to be enough for her, which is great because I couldnt stand to pump more than once a day.

I am excited to go to the part time schedule because I love some parts of working. I love going downtown and being amongst of the chaos of working people and of course there is the salty air coming from the water just a few blocks away and the incredible view of the city and the mountains in the background. I have been starting to read again on the bus and enjoy that time to myself. I also feel like Im missing out on lots of things that are happening with Finley and I hate that. I think about her all day long. There is nothing better than seeing the excitement on her face and the huge smile she gives me when I get home.

Our weekends have been packed with everything that normally gets spread throughout the week. My priorities have been spending time with Finley and the dogs, going shopping at the farmers market, going to the YMCA and lots of cooking and cleaning.

Regular photos and video have not been happening as much as I would like. I do have some that I will try to post later today. For now you just get words.

back to business

I slacked on the blog during most of the holiday season, but now I am back! Lots of changes going on with Finley and our family.

Finley is now 8 months old. She is still breastfeeding. My goal is 1 year. She is also eating lots of solid foods. She eats three meals a day and really enjoys trying new things. She rarely doesnt like something we offer her. She has a bit of eczema on her legs, so I might try to remove some allergenic foods from her diet and see if it clears up. We are giving her a combination of pureed foods and foods that she can feed her self. One of her favorites at the moment is cucumbers dipped in hummus.

She is still a sleeping machine. 12 hours every single night. It is awesome. The past few days she has been a napping machine too. I think she is fighting a sickness that both Ben and I have had. She is getting around faster and faster with her army crawl and often does real crawling too. She can almost put herself in a sitting up position, but not quite. Her desire to reach things high up motivates her to keep trying. This morning she crawled into the bathroom, grabbed a towel, took the towel out the bathroom and then emptied a box full of paper recycling in the kitchen. Of course this is all while there are toys surrounding her.

We are also hearing some babbling, lots of dadada, bababa. Sometimes her mouth makes the motion of talking, but nothing comes out. Its pretty cute.

She experienced her first non-family baby sitter the other day and did well. But I think we are all going to be in for a shock when she starts full time daycare. We have been planning this for awhile, but now it will be necessary because I was just offered a job that I will probably take. The training will be full time for 2 months and then I will be working from home in the evenings. When I start working from home, we will probably take her out of daycare or find one that offers part time.

In way less fun and exciting news, our car was broken into at 1 am last Saturday. Ben heard it all go down and by the time he looked outside the guy was running down the street with our GPS. The deductible on our car and home insurance won't cover either. Oh well, it could have been worse. The window is fixed and The Shryocks are giving us their old GPS.

home for christmas

We havent stayed home for the whole holiday season in a very long time! I have also never been to Reno or Texas for Christmas. So this year we decided to do both. This was Finley's third time flying....she wasnt quite ready for the experienced traveler line yet though.

Obviously we are not very germ concerned parents. We let Finley use up some energy on the floor of the airport before our flight.

We went to Texas first. We flew into Amarillo and then drove to Pampa. This is a very interesting part of the country. It it very flat and there arent a lot of trees. You can tell that it was a thriving community at one time, but now many businesses and houses are boarded up. There was a lot of money in oil at one time, but when the money stopped flowing, people left.

Anyway, most of Bens extended family lives there, so visiting with them and had a great time.

This is Aunt Lindas house

We went for a walk to a park near Lindas house

We stopped at Henry's house (Bens step-grandfather). He wasnt home, so what other choice did we have but to pose for a photo in front of his house.

Bens other Aunt Linda was out of town and let us stay at her house. It was very nice and comfortable. Finley approved of the toys and the crib.

On our last two days, we went to Amarillo to visit Aunt Barbara, her daughter Damaris and family. We had a great time with them just hanging out.

The sunsets in Texas are lovely

We found some pretty lights on our way back to the hotel

Then we headed to Reno on the 23rd. After we arrived, Ben and I went food shopping for all the food we planned to cook. For Christmas Eve we had grilled rib eye steaks, shrimp bisque and a green salad. For Christmas breakfast we had eggs benedict with smoked salmon and for dinner we had a Christmas Goose stuffed with apricots and apples, candied sweet potatoes with pecans, brussels sprouts with pancetta and carrot cake for dessert. We also made egg nog from scratch. I enjoyed all the cooking and eating, but feel like I dont need to eat for awhile!

Gran and Grandpas kitchen floor

After that we went to a Christmas party for kids. Finley started to have a TBM (total baby meltdown), so we did not get to see Santa. We did get to see a brass band and lots of kids having fun after probably consuming large amounts of sugar.

At the party!

Gran bought Finely some adorable snowman PJs

A beautiful snow globe collection

Finely got so many amazing gifts from friends and family. We are so fortunate to be able to give her more toys and clothes than we know what do with (literally). Some of the gift highlights were a DVD player for the car, a Lampe Berger, some jewelry, slippers for Ben, kitchen shears & sheets

Finely saw her friend Makenzie and they had fun playing on the floor and sharing toys.

Finley got this sign for her Grandpa to put on his garage

Kenneth with his goose

Finley got her Gran this necklace (she did a lot of shopping this year). She loved it!

some family friends visiting with the Shryocks

On our last night we went out to a restaurant called Sezmu in Reno. It probably would have been good, but I was sick of eating and Finley was fussy. I would like to go back and give it another shot.
